If you’re interested in animals, you’ve probably thought about going into a career which is animal-related. There’s lots of choice out there, from being a vet to volunteering at your local animal shelter. If you’re more interested in the welfare side of animals, then working as a RSPCA inspector could be right up your street. Here’s everything you need to know about the role of the UK’s biggest animal charity.
What types of jobs are on offer?
The RSCPA offers a wide range of job opportunities. Remember too that the RSCPA just covers England and Wales. The SSPCA does a similar role in Scotland, and the USPCA covers Northern Ireland. Get involved in campaigning, fundraising or with the administration side of running a large charity. If you’d prefer to be “hands-on” with the animals, then look for roles in a RSCPA hospital, or in one of the rehoming centres across the country. Animal charities also recruit qualified veterinary nurses and other professionals, so consider getting qualifications under your belt to increase your employability.
Working as a RSPCA inspector
Most people are aware of the prevention of cruelty role which the RSPCA has. The inspectors are at the sharp end of this work. It’s an inspector’s job to look into complaints about animal cruelty, and to give out advice about how to look after pets. It’s a demanding job, and you’ll need great interpersonal skills. RSCPA inspectors might have to rescue wildlife or abandoned animals too. An important part of the role is going to court and giving evidence when needed. The starting salary for a RSCPA inspector is around £19,000.
Qualifications and Training
Animals charities such as the RSCPA have their own training programme. If you’re accepted onto the programme, it will take about a year to qualify. Your personal qualities are often more important than formal academic qualifications. You’ll need to be physically fit, and happy to work outside in all weathers. Basic qualifications in English and Maths are essential, as is a genuine interest in animal welfare. RSPCA inspectors have to
apply for a DBS check before they start work with the charity.
Related Occupations
Getting a job working with the RSPCA isn’t easy. There are lots of people who want to do this sort of work, so competition is fierce. You can improve your chances by getting lots of relevant experience by volunteering with other animal charities or studying for qualifications in animal care or welfare. The RSCPA is the highest profile charity in the UK when it comes to animal welfare but it’s not the only one. Similar roles are available in many other welfare charities which specialise in the rescue or welfare of one particular animal. If you can’t find paid work with an animal charity, don’t rule out the possibility of volunteering. Being a volunteer allows you to try out the work before tying yourself in to a contract. It’s also a great chance for young people to get some experience before committing to a field of study.
